The Trebek Center Story

In response to the humanitarian homeless crisis in Los Angeles, and more specifically, the lack of Interim Housing beds in the northwest San Fernando Valley, Hope of the Valley recently purchased the 23,000 sq. ft. Northridge Roller Rink called Skateland.  The site, for the past 60 years has been a family recreation center for Valley and Southern California residents.  The recent pandemic made it impossible for the owners, Mike and Dave Fleming, to continue operations.

Hope of the Valley reached out to local City Councilmember John Lee for support on the project.  After evaluating the opportunity, Councilman Lee said he would fully support the project and ask that the project become part of the Mayor’s “A Bridge Home” initiative, thus securing a major portion of funding for the renovation.

Four Ways You Can Help

1. Sponsor a Room

The Trebek Center will have 107 cubicle bedrooms for residents. Each cubicle can be sponsored, with naming rights, for $3,000 each. Room sponsors will also receive a limited edition commemorative t-shirt with a special quote from the late Alex Trebek and artwork by Ryan Murray.

2. Become a Plank Sponsor

Skateland to Hopeland, skate floor preservation: To honor and celebrate the 60 year legacy of Skateland and its owners, the Fleming Family, Hope of the Valley will construct a special wall at the center out of roller rink wood planks. For $500.00, each sponsored plank will have the donors name etched into the wood! If you have fond memories skating at Skateland, be sure to sponsor one of the wood planks!

3. Become Part of the Trebek Tribute Wall

If you are in a financial position to give more than a $5,000 gift, please considering giving a major gift of $10k, $25k, $50K, $100k or $250k and become part of the Trebek Tribute Wall, a replica inspired by the original Jeopardy! Wall! One of the squares will have your name in it, memorializing your generosity to the Mission and support of Alex Trebek.

4. Bed-in-a-Bag

Bed-in-a-Bag–Any time we open a new shelter, we need to purchase two sets of bedding for each bed. The cost of a bed-in-a-bag is $50.00.

We have outgrown our kitchen!

Ken Photo 2 Million Meals

In the last 12 months, we have added seven shelters with over 900 beds (Six Tiny Home Villages, and the NEW 107-Bed Trebek Center which opened in April). This year we will be opening 3 New Family Shelters for families with children. With over 300 beds, these shelters will serve couples and single mothers and fathers with children.

Our dedicated team of chefs, kitchen-staff and drivers prepare and distribute 3 meals a day to our 16 different shelters located throughout the San Fernando Valley and Greater Los Angeles Area. And they have been doing all of this in a 400 square foot kitchen!

We have outgrown our kitchen. To help meet this growing demand we need to build a new kitchen. This new kitchen will be centrally located at the North Hills Administrative Building and will cost $2 Million.

Hope begins with a hot meal. Help us open this new kitchen and continue serving meals to our unhoused families and neighbors. Any size donation helps. Equal sacrifice, not equal gifts.

3 Ways You Can Help
  • Sponsor Meals: Each meal costs $2.05. For $49.20 you can sponsor 24 meals.
  • Become a Kitchen Tile Sponsor: A #HOPEWINS mosaic will be featured prominently in the NEW Kitchen. Tiles can be sponsored for $500, $1000, $1500 & $2000 gifts.
  • Kitchen Sponsor: Gifts of $2,500 or more will receive a special customizable acknowledgment in the NEW kitchen (to be announced).
