"Life was out of control. I'd lost everything, including myself."

Roberto grew up in an abusive home, a witness of physical violence and a target of verbal abuse. “Music and drugs were a way to isolate myself, be in my own mind and get away from everything.”

He began abusing drugs when he was 16 and, over the next 12 years, became addicted to alcohol and harder drugs, costing him jobs, damaging relationships and, finally, leaving him homeless. “I’d lost everything, including myself,” he says. “I found out about Hope of the Valley’s Help Center and I would come and shower and eat.”

During one of those visits, Roberto overheard a conversation about our House of Hope Men’s Recovery Program. “I couldn’t get it out of my mind. I felt I was going to be in a never-ending cycle of addiction if I didn’t do something,” he says. “Life was out of control. I was ready for a change.”

Roberto entered the program, hoping not only to get clean, but to rebuild his relationship with the Lord. “There was a time when I’d had a lot of faith and being here has rekindled it,” he says. “I feel God’s presence more than ever before.”

Roberto has also been healing emotionally through the program. “I had a lot of negativity, but now I’m hopeful, more positive, grateful,” he says.

Through the program’s Work Therapy component, Roberto has been sharing his growing faith and newfound hope by serving others at the Help Center and our Recuperative Care Shelter. “We look out for the people who come here and I love it,” he says. “I definitely want to go into a field where I can help others.”

Roberto has a new outlook on life thanks to the Mission. “I want to get even closer to God, be a peacemaker, be an example, be a good person,” he says. “I thank God for this place.”

He’s a man with a heart of gratitude for friends like you who have made his journey possible. Thank you for your continued generosity.
